Sunsets

One thing Florida is wonderful for is sunsets. Clouds oddly shaped by boisterous winds adorn golden linings in the evening hours.

Miramar beach : crowded in the most pleasant way, made it a people watching goldmine. Kites, sandcastles, and lovers walking hand in hand framed the spectacular sunsets. The crab hunters came out at the end of the day and the scene was altogether stunning.

The sunset at it's most golden state, with the sun still in the sky and the sands glowing bronze.

The sun has disappeared beneath the horizon, leaving strips of gold and blue, like chrome on a new car.

The sun is gone, the colors darken, and it's just perfect timing for some crab hunting.

By the Seashore

This summer is just full of beaches. It’s not even the end of June yet! My mum, brother, Jeremy and I collected all these little live clams on the Myrtle Beach Shore. Isn’t nature amazing? Each little life is an artistic expression. Can’t wait to frame these!

Fancy

This is the second weekend I’m finding myself in a wonderful condo on a beach. This time, instead of Destin, I’m at Myrtle Beach! We scored a sweet 3 bedroom condo on the 15th floor. It’s oceanfront and ocean view and as an added bonus, it is a corner unit. I totally love it. I’m going to try to be awesome and be up at 5:30am tomorrow to shoot some of the sunrise. I know it’s 1 am now and that I may just snooze til I lose but I’m going to try!

Myrtle beach at night is haunting. The waves are lapping at the shore and people are crab hunting at midnight. Tomorrow night I’ll be among the crustacean chasing masses!

Pelican Madness

Jeremy and I encountered an interesting pelican this weekend while traipsing around Florida. He was playing cute at first.. so I thought..

But as soon as we tried to take a picture with him he showed us his true colors!

What a jerk!

Oh well, I got a good shot out of it, so fair’s fair. :)

Teal

I had the privilege of shooting a beautifully decorated event this weekend. Teal and green combined with the romantic pinks gave the room some pop. IMG_2843

Orange Flowers

We have started populating our deck with plenty of flowers and plants. One of my favorites is this Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana, which is not only easy to take care of, but beautiful as well. It’s perfect for a home with two working people in it! :)

Animals

Since the cold is all gone, the animals have come out in large numbers. This toad on our deck perplexed us as our deck has no access from the ground. He must have walked up our house?

Gray and Change

I am still working on the set of images from my shoot with JoAnn a few weeks ago. It’s been an arduous, but very rewarding process. I’m honing and refining my skill at editorial type photography through this because JoAnn was nice enough to lend me all her time as well as plan out a beautiful itinerary for that day. I saw so many wonderful places and she was a super willing model.

This photo is easily one of my favorites partly because it is just so natural. The light leak effect was done with some leaves in the foreground and the little bokeh bits in the air are actually floating seed fluff from nearby plants. The magical look didn’t require any Photoshop and I’m really trying to understand my personal style as I develop it.

I’ve read article after article from photographers, artists, and business people about solidifying your style and I’ll admit it’s one of my greatest struggles. I want to just buy a pile of actions from some other artist and just tweak my photos. That’s easy. It works. I can even be considered smart, efficient business.  But if my personal history has taught me anything, I need to find a way to do things myself and understand my color, depth and composition choices. I can’t just do it because it “looks good”. I want to know why it looks good to me.  I am looking into picking up some books, particularly On Photography, to help me understand the photograph, both as a product of my mind as well as a product of my surroundings and a force of it’s own.

Hey it’s Memorial day weekend! Hope everyone’s gonna have some fun! I know I am! :)
