DragonCon 2013

Jeremy and I went to go check out DragonCon this year as observers. We didn’t buy tickets but we did show up on parade day to check out all the cosplay! There were wild costumes, familiar characters, and well done groups! I will have to make this a yearly standard event that Jeremy and I attend. :) Next year we will buy tickets and I will do things like see George Takei!

Here are a few photos I took.

When you’re 20 you care what everyone thinks, when you’re 40 you stop caring what everyone thinks, when you’re 60 you realize no one was ever thinking about you in the first place

Feel the Love

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

New, young voices in music are bringing a vintage sound to the music scene with them. I know I’ve mentioned on this blog earlier that I have simply loved the move that pop music made into club and trance style beats but I think that’s starting to fade away. Its decade is coming to a close. This next generation of music inclined youth, and I can say that now because I’m almost thirty, includes the babies of the nineties and they aremaking the sounds of the oldies hip again. They’re okay with letting themselves fall more deeply into the styles of music that our parents grew up to.

Northern Soul is a style of music that developed in the underground houses of the 1960’s in the UK, following closely the faster sounds and beats of the genre of Black American soul music. By the 70’s it was mainstream. Think mod clothes, and British accents thrown in. Welcome to 2013. Northern Soul is back.

I’ve really begun to dig John Newman. He is the lead singer of a band called Rudimental, and their sound is just divine. His deep vocals, and their fast paced beat mixed in with trumpets, piano, and some big band sound just tickle all the right auditory spots. A girl like me just loves some Motown sound.

Three songs you really need to give a listen.

Fat friends

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

I love my furry little roommates. I always think about how people refer to themselves as being their pets’ “mom” and realize that is totally NOT the relationship I have with these two fatters. They’re basically messy housemates that bum off my good will. I totally appreciate the fuzzy company though.

Jones Bridge Park

The dam had been shut this past Sunday giving the water at Jones Bridge Park back its signature color palette.  Clear water that shone with blues, purples and lime greens replaced the brown sludgey rainwater look. People took notice and when Sana and I stopped in, the park was full and there were people walking all through the river shallows.

This young couple found themselves their own little island on which to smooch.  Yeah. I am that creepy person.

Fishermen were lining their tackle. The green backdrop was perfect in the afternoon sun.  I love people watching!

Naps

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Jeremy is a napper and I am not. Once a day, in the middle, the dude just has to hit the hay. I am left to my own devices at this time which may not mean good things for Jeremy. He was the subject of his own waking-from-nap photo shoot a couple weeks ago. Was he a willing model? No. :P

Watermelon Limeade

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image image=”24598″ img_link_large=”yes” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”medium”][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

This season’s watermelons have all been amazingly juicy! I guess the rains are paying off big time in the fruit market. Aside from watermelons, the cherries, local peaches, and grapes have all been exceptionally juicy this year.

I was browsing Bon Apetit looking for watermelon recipes and came across this limeade. I’ve tried cherry limeades but never a watermelon one and we gave it a shot.  Half a watermelon made about 4 large tumblers full of the drink

I love the coral color it took on, and the tang it got from the limes was …. TANGY! No shit, right? :P

Watermelon Limeade

Originally from here, at Bon Appétit.

  • 6 cups 1-inch-pieces watermelon (from about 1/2 5-pound watermelon)
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • 2–3 tablespoons light agave syrup (nectar) or honey
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Purée watermelon, lime juice, and 2 Tbsp. agave syrup in a blender until smooth. Add 1 Tbsp. more agave, if desired. Strain into a large pitcher filled with ice and stir in 1/2 cup water. Serve over ice and garnish with lime wedges.
