Movie

Jurassic World

Spoilers ahead, you’ve been warned! :) Jeremy and I caught Jurassic World last week and I can’t say I was completely disappointed. I can’t say that it hit it out of the park either. Chris Pratt … played Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard could’ve really used a little more depth. They tried to bring realism to her character and it was akin bringing emotion and relatability to a cardboard cutout. I think that’s my biggest gripe about this movie was that the editing and the script made the relationships forced.

Okay, that one gripe out of the way, the dinosaurs were awesome.

Every dinosaur scene was a rush, and the ending (which I won’t spoil) was especially satisfying. I didn’t care about the actors anymore about 50% of the way through the movie because they weren’t worth the space in my mind that was being taken up by dinosaurs!

I’d rate this movie a 4/5. Worth seeing, but expect to sit through some really stiff acting and shallow characterization.

Midtown Phone Tour

Last week I had the opportunity to take on a little bit of midtown with phone cameras with a good old friend of mine! We focused on architecture around the arts center area and practiced our phone photo-fu! Scroll through the results!

Contentedness

Coming home from work, I feel a bit drained some days. But looking at this fluffy mass of complete contentedness is a relaxing activity that feels as good as a nap. :)

Books

The Handmaid’s Tale

margaret_atwood_the_handmaids_taleWhen I picked up this novel, I wasn’t expecting the sinking feeling I’d get for weeks as I tried to finish it.

Thoroughly engrossing, it made me bleed emotionally. Keeping the pages turning became a tough task not because the book was a boring or cumbersome read, but because the story made me feel so heavy, like reading many of Orwell’s books (Animal Farm and 1984 in particular) makes me feel. In any case it stirred the feminist parts of me, wrung the parts of me that fear powerful religion, and left me laying in my bed wondering how to make sure this kind of stuff doesn’t happen. Parallels with the holocaust, internment, and our current world’s religious tyrannical oligarchies made it feel that much more real.

Excellent read, and probably one of the best books I’ve ever read.

I’ve gotten the idea into my head that I want a physical library of all the books that really made an impact on me. While searching for a good quality hardback, I came across these great illustrations by Ana and Elena Balbusso.
