Platycodon grandiflorus

The Platycodon grandiflorus, also known as the Chinese bellflower, has recently decided to sprout in one of my little garden beds again.

Last year I tried playing the role of the homeowner and planted a few of these knowing only that I loved their cute balloon shaped buds that eventually burst into bright blue star shaped blooms.

Turns out that these plants are actually as useful as they are ornamental. Their roots are used to treat inflammation and coughs and colds in eastern medicine.
Also they’re quite hardy, which explains why they’ve returned this year for a second mishandling!
