This year, our hummingbirds came in March, and they didn’t leave. Previous years, they’ve always gone on further into their journey around May and returned only in mid-August, but this time they stayed the whole summer. Things have been really dry down here in Georgia, so there are way fewer flowers than there usually are at the end of the summer, so we keep out a couple of hummingbird feeders. I don’t think very many of our neighbors are doing the same because there are like five hummingbirds in our backyard, and they are aggressive. We have one male who is very shiny red, and he is stunning to look at, but he is like a super jerk. He guards both of the feeders from the other hummingbirds. In any case, it was extra active during my lunch hour today, so I took a half an hour to follow their little aggressive sagas as they chase each other away from what is essentially an endless and totally shareable resource that will never disappear. I thought to myself, “You know what, people are just the same.”
